You’re Not Broke… You’re Just Not Paying Attention
Let me say something that might sting a little at first.
Most people who think they are broke are not actually broke.
They are just not paying attention.
I know that sounds blunt, but stick with me, because this realization has the power to completely change your financial life.
There is a massive difference between not having enough money and not knowing where your money is going. And the truth is, most people fall into the second category.
They are earning money. Sometimes even decent money. But at the end of every month, they are left wondering the same thing.
“Where did it all go?”
If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. In fact, that is the norm. But normal does not equal smart, and it definitely does not lead to financial freedom.
When I got my first job as a waitress in college, I had to figure this out for myself. I did not have some complex system or financial advisor guiding me. I just had a simple goal. I was not going to spend more than I made. Period.
But here is the thing. You cannot stick to that rule if you are not paying attention.
So I did something that most people avoid.
I tracked everything.
Every dollar that came in. Every dollar that went out.
Nothing fancy. Just a basic spreadsheet. But that one habit changed everything for me. It forced me to face reality. No guessing, no hoping, no pretending I had more money than I actually did.
Just facts.
And once you see the facts, you can actually do something about them.
Most people avoid this step because they are afraid of what they will find. They would rather swipe their card and not think about it than face the truth of their spending habits. But ignoring your money does not make your problems go away. It quietly makes them worse.
Here is what is really happening when you do not track your money.
Small, seemingly harmless expenses start stacking up. Coffee here, takeout there, a random online purchase because it was on sale. None of these feel like a big deal in the moment. But together, they can eat up hundreds or even thousands of dollars every month.
And then people say they are broke.
No. They are just leaking money.
The good news is that this is one of the easiest problems to fix.
You do not need to make more money right away. You do not need to completely change your lifestyle overnight. You just need to start paying attention.
For the next seven days, I want you to track every single dollar you spend.
Yes, every single one.
Write it down. Put it in your notes app. Use a spreadsheet if you want to be like me. It does not matter how you do it, just do it consistently.
At the end of those seven days, take a look at where your money actually went.
Not where you think it went. Where it actually went.
You might be surprised. You might even be a little uncomfortable. That is okay. That discomfort is where change begins.
Because once you are aware, you are in control.
When you know your numbers, you can start making intentional decisions. You can decide what is worth your money and what is not. You can cut out the things that do not matter and redirect that money toward things that actually improve your life.
Savings. Investments. A future that does not rely on your next paycheck.
This is how you stop living paycheck to paycheck. Not by hoping for a raise or waiting for the perfect opportunity, but by taking control of what you already have.
Your money should never be a mystery to you.
You worked for it. You earned it. You should know exactly where it is going.
So before you tell yourself that you are broke, ask yourself a better question.
Am I actually broke, or am I just not paying attention?
Start there. It is a simple shift, but it changes everything.
